Transfer News: Barcelona Consider Anthony Martial Swoop

Barcelona are said to be considering making a move for Anthony Martial next year as the Frenchman has been given the green light to leave Manchester United.

According to a Eurosport report, Manchester United have informed striker Anthony Martial that he will look for a new club in January or the summer of next year, sparking the interest of Barcelona, who is now considering the possibility of choosing the Frenchman.

Martial came to Manchester United in the summer of 2015 from Monaco for a fee that made him the world’s most expensive teenager at the time. However, after a fantastic first season, the Frenchman struggled to live up to expectations and failed to deliver consistently.

The 2019/20 season gave some hope as he finished as the club’s top scorer, but last season was another disappointment for the 25-year-old before injury brought an early end to the season. With Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani overtaking him in the standings, Martial has been linked with a summer outing from Manchester United.

However, the Red Devils decided not to part with the former Monaco star, and decided to give him another chance to prove himself. But chances were hard to come by in Martial’s new season, as Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo, pushing him down the order of things at Old Trafford.

While the 25-year-old would like to stay with the club, he does not want to do so as a fringe player and is considering going to a club in the Premier League or elsewhere in Europe. It is now said that Barcelona are considering a raid on Martial next year, although it has not been made clear whether it will be in January or the summer.

The Catalans are undergoing a rebuilding process in their attacking division, having lost Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann last summer. He entered Memphis Depay and had a great start to the season, but lacks good support around him, due to injuries to Sergio Aguero, Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati.

Luke de Jong’s arrival deadline doesn’t seem quite right at the Camp Nou based on early signs, while Aguero’s recent injury problems mean he can hardly be considered a reliable start. In addition, with Dembele’s contract running out in the summer, it makes sense that the Blaugrana would consider stepping up their attack.

To that end, Martial could be a useful signature given his experience at the highest level, with age on his side as well. However, the Frenchman’s move could prove difficult for Barcelona, with Manchester United valuing him at £40m, while his whopping £250,000-a-week salary would also be a hindrance.

It remains to be seen if the Blaugrana decide to sign Martial, but as it stands, it appears the France international’s time at Manchester United may be coming to an end.
